Roller blinds are the most common blind people weigh against curtains. A roller blind sits inside or just above the window frame, rolls up out of the way, and costs less per window than a pair of day and night curtains. Living room: your call, often both. Soft and layered? Day and night curtains. Clean lines? Roller or zebra blinds. Many living rooms use a sheer plus a blind or blackout panel.

Blackout is a system, not a fabric. The fabric blocks light coming through it, but light still leaks around the top, sides, and bottom. Without a pelmet or side channels, even the best blackout fabric leaves a glow. The same applies to blackout blinds. Slat gaps and side clearances leak.
