Quartz vs Sintered Stone Countertops in Singapore: Which Should You Pick?
How quartz and sintered stone compare for Singapore kitchens: heat, scratches, stains, chipping, outdoor use, upkeep and price per foot run.
- Quartz costs about $120 to $180 per foot run and is less prone to edge chipping.
- Sintered stone costs more but handles heat and sunlight far better.
- Pick sintered stone for heavy wok cooking or sunny counters; quartz for value.
Quartz and sintered stone are the two most popular kitchen countertops in Singapore renovations. Quartz is cheaper and less prone to chipping. Sintered stone costs more but takes heat and sunlight far better. If you cook a lot with hot woks and pots, or the counter gets direct sun, sintered stone is usually worth the extra. Otherwise quartz is the safer value pick.
Quick comparison
| Quartz | Sintered stone | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Natural quartz bound with resin and pigments | Natural minerals fused under extreme heat and pressure, no resin |
| Heat | Resin can mark from hot pots; use trivets | Highly heat resistant |
| Scratches and stains | Good; resists everyday stains | Very good; resists stains |
| Sunlight and outdoor use | Resin can yellow under UV; not for outdoors | Suitable for sunny spots and outdoor kitchens |
| Chipping | More forgiving at edges | Thin edges can chip on impact |
| Upkeep | Wipe with a damp cloth | Wipe with a damp cloth |
| Typical price (2026) | About $120 to $180 per foot run | About $160 to $380 per foot run, depending on the brand and supplier |
Heat: the biggest practical difference
Quartz contains resin, and a hot wok or pot placed directly on it can leave a permanent mark. Sintered stone has no resin and handles heat far better, which suits Singapore kitchens that cook at high heat. With quartz, use a trivet every time.
Chipping and edges
Sintered stone is hard but can chip at thin edges or corners if knocked by a heavy pot. Ask your fabricator about edge profiles, such as a mitred or laminated edge, and make sure undermount sink cut-outs are done carefully, since a rushed cut can crack the slab. Quartz is more forgiving at the edges.
Price per foot run
Typical Singapore 2026 estimates put quartz at about $120 to $180 per foot run. Sintered stone ranges more widely, from about $160 to $240 with some suppliers up to about $220 to $380 for premium brands. For a typical HDB kitchen of 10 to 14 feet of countertop, the difference is often several hundred to over a thousand dollars. See our HDB kitchen renovation cost guide for the full kitchen budget.
Which should you choose?
- Choose sintered stone if you cook at high heat often, the counter gets direct sunlight, or you want an outdoor or balcony counter.
- Choose quartz if you want lower cost, a wide colour choice and fewer worries about chipped edges, and you are happy to use trivets.
- Mix them: some homes use sintered stone only around the hob and quartz elsewhere.

FAQ
Is sintered stone better than quartz? For heat and sunlight, yes. Quartz is cheaper and less prone to edge chipping, so the better choice depends on how you cook and your budget.
Can I put a hot pot on a quartz countertop? It is best not to. The resin in quartz can be marked by high heat, so use a trivet.
Does sintered stone chip easily? It is very hard but can chip at thin edges or corners if knocked. A good edge profile and careful fabrication reduce the risk.
How much is a quartz countertop in Singapore? Typically about $120 to $180 per foot run in 2026, depending on the brand and thickness.
