Shoe Cabinet Design Ideas for HDB Flats
Built-in and ready-made shoe cabinet ideas for HDB entrances, the sizes that work, how to stop smells and mould, and which materials suit Singapore's humidity.
- Floating, full-height, bench and tilt-out shoe cabinets suit different HDB entrances.
- About 30 to 35cm depth fits most adult shoes.
- Ventilated doors and moisture-resistant materials stop smells and mould.
A good shoe cabinet keeps an HDB entrance tidy, stops smells and gives you somewhere to sit and put on shoes. In Singapore's humidity, ventilation matters as much as size. Here are the designs that work best at HDB and BTO entrances.
Shoe cabinet designs that suit HDB entrances
- Floating shoe cabinet. Mounted off the floor with space underneath for daily pairs and easy mopping. Strip lighting below makes the entrance feel bigger.
- Full-height shoe cabinet. Floor to ceiling for families, with the top shelves for boots and seasonal items.
- Shoe cabinet with bench. A seat built into the cabinet for putting on shoes, with drawers for socks and keys.
- Slim tilt-out cabinet. Shallow tilting compartments for narrow corridors where a deep cabinet will not fit.
- Cabinet with a mirror or key tray. A full-length mirror door and a small open shelf for keys and masks.
Sizes that work
- Depth: about 30 to 35cm fits most adult shoes; tilt-out units can be shallower.
- Shelf height: allow about 12 to 15cm for everyday shoes and taller compartments for boots.
- Bench height: about 45cm is comfortable for sitting.
- Keep the main door clear. Make sure the main door can still open fully, and keep the corridor outside your flat free of shoes and racks.
Stop smells and mould
- Ventilated doors: slatted, perforated or fluted doors with gaps let air circulate.
- Leave space under the cabinet so air moves and wet shoes can dry first.
- Use moisture-resistant materials: laminate or PVC-lined interiors handle humidity better than raw board. See laminate vs veneer.
- Add a small charcoal or silica gel pack inside each compartment.
Built-in or ready-made?
- Built-in carpentry fits your entrance exactly and can match the rest of the flat, such as a fluted feature wall. It is priced per foot run like other carpentry. See fluted panel feature walls.
- Ready-made cabinets cost less and can move with you. We can assemble flat-pack shoe cabinets and anchor tall ones to the wall. See handyman services.
Where shoe cabinets cannot go
Never fix a shoe cabinet to the household shelter walls, which HDB does not allow to be drilled. Keep the corridor outside your door clear, as it is common property. More rules are in our HDB renovation guidelines.
