HDB Rules for Main Gate Replacement
HDB does not require a permit to replace a main entrance metal gate, but the new gate must meet these conditions from HDB's renovation guidelines:
- The gate width, number of panels and swing must be the same as those originally provided by HDB.
- The gate swing must not obstruct the public escape route.
- For units along a common corridor, there must be at least 0.6m clearance from the gate to the corridor parapet wall when the gate opens perpendicular to it.
- For units next to a staircase, the clearance from the edge of the open gate to the staircase railing must be at least the width of the staircase.
- For corner units, the gate must not hit the neighbouring flat's window.

HDB Gate Repair
- Bolts that will not slot or retract. Usually the gate has dropped or the bolt hole is blocked. We realign the gate and clear or adjust the bolt and keeper.
- Sagging gate. Worn hinges replaced or re-welded so the gate swings clear of the floor.
- Rust. Light rust is cleaned and repainted. Gates rusted through at the base are better replaced.
- Lock not catching. The gate and lock are adjusted together so the latch meets the keeper.
