Invisible Grille Singapore: How It Works and Your Options
An invisible grille is a set of thin stainless steel cables held under tension between an aluminium top and bottom track. From inside, the cables almost disappear, so you keep your view and light.
- Fixed invisible grilles. The cables stay in place. The lowest cost, and suits windows you do not need to reach through.
- Openable invisible grilles. Sliding or casement frames with cables, so you can open them for cleaning or in an emergency. They cost more.
- Cable grade. Grade 316 stainless steel resists rust better than grade 304 in Singapore's humid, rainy weather, and costs more. Ask for the grade in writing.
- Coating. Nylon-coated cables reduce glare and protect the steel.
- Cable spacing. Closer spacing uses more cables and costs more. Ask for it if you have toddlers.

Invisible Grilles and HDB Rules
HDB's renovation guidelines do not have a separate rule for invisible grilles, so we follow HDB's grille rules:
| Grille work | HDB permit needed? | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Install or replace grilles at the service yard or balcony parapet | Yes | For flats handed over from 1 July 2007, grilles must be of HDB approved designs, shown in your renovation factsheet or on MyHDB Page. |
| Install or replace internal metal grilles of any design at windows and balcony parapets | No | For developments handed over before 1 July 2007. Grilles must be fixed internally and must not protrude from the building facade. |
| Metal grilles at an interaction balcony | No | Grille height must not exceed the height of the unit, and no combustible material may be stored at the balcony. |
Before an invisible grille goes on a service yard or balcony, check your flat's renovation factsheet or MyHDB Page. Grille works that need an HDB permit are carried out by our partner V On Construction Pte. Ltd., listed in HDB's Directory of Renovation Contractors. In condos, check your MCST's by-laws first.
Invisible Grilles for Children and Cats
- Children. Invisible grilles help stop falls from windows and balconies. Keep furniture away from windows so children cannot climb up, and check cable tension from time to time.
- Cats. Cats can squeeze between grille cables, so invisible grilles are not reliably cat-proof. Many cat owners add cat mesh on the windows the cat uses. See our pet proofing service.
- Mosquitoes. Grilles do not stop insects. Add a mosquito net inside the window.
What to Send for an Invisible Grille Quote
- Photos of each window or balcony from inside, showing the frame, ceiling and floor.
- Rough width and height of each opening, or your floor plan.
- Your flat type and the year it was handed over, or your renovation factsheet.
- Whether you want fixed or openable grilles, and whether you have toddlers or cats.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much is an invisible grille in Singapore?
A fixed invisible grille for a bedroom window typically costs about $150 to $300, and an openable one about $400 to $600. A fixed HDB balcony grille is about $600 to $1,800.
Are invisible grilles safe for children?
They are designed to help prevent falls from windows and balconies. Choose closer cable spacing for toddlers, keep furniture away from windows, and check the cable tension from time to time.
Are invisible grilles cat-proof?
Not reliably. Cats can squeeze between the cables. Cat mesh or nets are better for cats, and many owners combine both.
Do I need HDB approval for an invisible grille?
HDB's guidelines do not list invisible grilles separately. Under HDB's grille rules, service yard and balcony parapet grilles in flats handed over from 1 July 2007 need a permit and an approved design, so check your renovation factsheet or MyHDB Page first.
Grade 304 or 316 stainless steel cables?
Grade 316 resists rust better in Singapore's humid weather and costs more. Ask your installer to state the cable grade in writing.
Can invisible grilles be opened?
Yes, if you choose an openable system with sliding or casement frames. Fixed invisible grilles cannot be opened.
