HDB Window Grille Rules

Grille workHDB permit needed?Conditions
Install or replace grilles at the service yard or balcony parapetYesFor flats handed over from 1 July 2007, grilles must be of HDB approved designs, shown in your renovation factsheet or on MyHDB Page.
Install or replace internal metal grilles of any design at windows and balcony parapetsNoFor developments handed over before 1 July 2007. Grilles must be fixed internally and must not protrude from the building facade.
Metal grilles at an interaction balconyNoGrille height must not exceed the height of the unit, and no combustible material may be stored at the balcony.

Where a permit is needed, the renovation contractor applies to HDB for you. Grille works that need an HDB permit are carried out by our partner V On Construction Pte. Ltd., listed in HDB's Directory of Renovation Contractors. Grilles are fitted to the window frame or wall; they are not window replacement. If your window itself needs repair or replacement, that is done by a BCA Approved Window Contractor. See window repair.

Choosing a Window Grille

  • Young children. Grilles on every window a child can reach, and keep beds, sofas and chairs away from windows so children cannot climb up.
  • Cats. Standard grilles leave gaps that cats can squeeze through. Choose a cat-proof grille, or add mesh. See our pet proofing service.
  • Mosquitoes. Grilles do not stop insects. Add a mosquito net inside the window.
  • Access. Sliding or casement grilles let you open the window fully for cleaning and in an emergency.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much are window grilles in Singapore?

Aluminium window grilles cost from about $8 to $10 per sq ft installed, and cat-proof grilles about $12 to $14 per sq ft. Whole-flat BTO packages are about $600 to $1,300 by flat size.

Do I need HDB approval for window grilles?

It depends on where the grille goes and when your flat was handed over. Service yard and balcony parapet grilles in flats handed over from 1 July 2007 need a permit and an HDB approved design. Internal grilles in flats handed over before 1 July 2007 do not need a permit, but must not protrude from the facade.

Where can I find my flat's approved grille design?

In the renovation factsheet given at flat booking or key collection, or by logging in to MyHDB Page.

Are aluminium grilles cat-proof?

Standard grilles are not, as cats can squeeze through the gaps. Choose a cat-proof grille with closer spacing, or add cat mesh.

Sliding or fixed window grilles?

Sliding grilles cost a little more but let you open the window fully for cleaning and emergencies. Fixed grilles suit windows you never need to reach through.

How long does window grille installation take?

Grilles are made to measure, so allow time for fabrication after measurement. Installation for a whole flat usually takes about a day.
