Tap Replacement Singapore: Types of Taps
- Basin taps and mixers. Single-hole pillar taps and basin mixers, the most common taps in HDB and condo bathrooms.
- Kitchen sink mixers. Fixed spout, swivel and pull-out mixers. Pull-out taps need enough space under the sink for the hose and weight.
- Wall-mounted taps. Common in service yards, kitchens and older toilets. The new tap must match the thread and position of the existing point.
- Shower mixers and shower sets. Exposed shower mixers, rain shower sets, hand showers and hoses.
- Washing machine and bib taps. Taps for the washing machine inlet and yard washing, often replaced when they start to drip or seize.
If you are changing the sink or basin at the same time, see sink installation so both are done in one visit.

Which Tap Work Needs a Licensed Plumber
PUB lists replacing or removing any tap or mixer, and accessories such as shower hoses, showerheads and flexible hoses, as simple plumbing works that a handyman may do. So a straight swap on an existing point does not need a licensed plumber.
Adding a new tap point, moving a tap to a new position or changing the water pipes behind it is regulated water service work. Since 1 April 2018 it has been an offence to engage a plumber who is not licensed by PUB for regulated works, so that part of the job is done by a PUB-licensed plumber. Our plumber page explains the rules in more detail.
What to Send for a Tap Replacement Quote
- A photo of the existing tap and where it connects, at the basin, sink or wall.
- A photo under the sink showing the hoses and the angle valve.
- A short video if the tap drips, leaks at the base or is hard to turn.
- The model or a photo of the new tap if you have already bought it.
Repair or Replace a Leaking Tap?
A tap that drips from the spout usually has a worn washer or cartridge. On better-quality mixers, replacing the cartridge is worth doing if the part is available. For most basic taps, the labour for a repair is close to the cost of a new tap, so replacement is the better value.
Water leaking from under the sink is often the flexible hose or bottle trap rather than the tap. If the cabinet base is wet, check the hoses first. Leaks inside the wall behind a wall tap need to be traced and are quoted separately. If water has damaged the wall, see hole and wall repair.
