Wardrobe Tips for Singapore Homes
- Fight humidity. Leave a small gap at the back or add vents, and avoid sealing a wardrobe against a damp external wall. See wall mould removal if the wall is already mouldy.
- Light the inside. Sensor LED strips make dark corners usable. New wiring is done by an EMA licensed electrical worker.
- Protect clothes from sun. A blackout curtain stops fading in west-facing rooms. See blackout curtains.
- Check the ceiling. Bulkheads and air-con trunking change the height. Measure at several points.
HDB Rules for Wardrobes
- No permit is needed for wardrobe carpentry. Joining two rooms for a walk-in wardrobe means removing a wall, which needs HDB approval.
- Household shelter. HDB says the shelter walls, floor slab, ceiling and door must not be tampered with, and fixtures that cannot be removed easily in an emergency should not be installed inside it. Only removable fixings are allowed there.
- Fixings. HDB limits nails and screws to 6mm in diameter and 40mm in penetration depth.
HDB asks owners to use a contractor from its Directory of Renovation Contractors for renovation works in a flat, even where no permit is needed. Renovation works are carried out by our partner V On Construction Pte. Ltd., listed in HDB's Directory of Renovation Contractors.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a built-in wardrobe cost in Singapore?
Typically about $200 to $450 per foot run in 2026. Laminate swing doors are about $200 to $320 per foot run and sliding doors about $250 to $400.
Are sliding or swing doors better?
Sliding doors save space in small bedrooms. Swing doors cost less and let you see the whole wardrobe at once.
Do I need an HDB permit for a built-in wardrobe?
No. Wardrobe carpentry does not need a permit, but removing a wall for a walk-in wardrobe does.
Can I build a wardrobe in the household shelter?
HDB does not allow fixtures that cannot be removed easily inside the household shelter. A free-standing wardrobe is the usual solution.
How long does a built-in wardrobe take?
Fabrication usually takes about two to four weeks after measuring, and installation about a day per wardrobe.
How do I stop mould in my wardrobe?
Keep the back off damp walls, add ventilation, avoid storing damp clothes and use moisture absorbers. Fix any leak in the wall first.
