Materials and Finishes

  • Laminate. The default in Singapore. Hard-wearing, easy to wipe and available in woodgrain, matt and stone looks.
  • Wood veneer. Real timber on the surface for a warmer look. Needs more care around water.
  • Spray paint. A smooth, handle-less look in any colour. Shows chips more than laminate.
  • Carcass board. Plywood carcasses are the usual choice. Ask for moisture-resistant board under sinks and in bathrooms.
  • Hardware. Soft-close hinges and full-extension runners cost more but last longer.

Our laminate vs veneer guide compares the two finishes in detail.

HDB Rules for Carpentry

  • No permit. Carpentry itself generally does not need an HDB permit. Hacking a wall to fit it does.
  • Household shelter. HDB says the shelter walls, floor slab, ceiling and door must not be tampered with, and fixtures that cannot be removed easily in an emergency should not be installed inside it. Only removable fixings are allowed there.
  • Fixings. HDB limits nails and screws to 6mm in diameter and 40mm in penetration depth.
  • Kitchen weep holes. Cabinets must not seal or block the weep hole of an enclosed sanitary duct.
  • Wiring. Lighting inside cabinets that needs new wiring is done by an EMA licensed electrical worker.

HDB asks owners to use a contractor from its Directory of Renovation Contractors for renovation works in a flat, even where no permit is needed. Renovation works are carried out by our partner V On Construction Pte. Ltd., listed in HDB's Directory of Renovation Contractors. Planning a wider renovation? See HDB interior design.

Repair, Reface or Replace?

  • Repair when the carcass is sound and only hinges, runners or a door have failed. Our handyman team handles these.
  • Reface when the boxes are solid but the doors look dated. New doors and handles change the look for much less than a full rebuild.
  • Replace when boards are swollen from water, shelves sag, or the layout no longer works.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does carpentry cost in Singapore?

Laminate carpentry typically costs about $150 to $450 per foot run in 2026, depending on the item. Shoe cabinets sit at the lower end and wardrobes and kitchen islands at the higher end.

What does per foot run mean?

It is the price per foot of length along the wall. Kitchen cabinets are often quoted for top and bottom together, so check whether the rate covers both.

Do I need an HDB permit for carpentry?

Generally no. HDB still asks owners to use a contractor from its Directory of Renovation Contractors for renovation works, and hacking a wall to fit carpentry does need a permit.

How long does custom carpentry take?

Fabrication usually takes about two to four weeks after measurement, and installation one to three days for most items.

Is laminate or veneer better?

Laminate is tougher and easier to clean. Veneer looks and feels like real wood but costs about 30% more and needs more care.

Can you build carpentry in the household shelter?

HDB does not allow fixtures that cannot be removed easily in the household shelter, and its walls, floor, ceiling and door must not be tampered with. A free-standing cabinet is the usual choice.
