Kitchen Countertop Replacement Singapore: Materials

  • Quartz. The value pick. Resists stains, wide colour choice, more forgiving at the edges. Its resin can be marked by hot pots, so use a trivet.
  • Sintered stone. Very heat and UV resistant, so it suits heavy wok cooking and sunny counters. Thin edges can chip if knocked.
  • Solid surface. Seamless joins and scratches that can be sanded out. Often the most affordable of the three, but less heat resistant than stone.
  • Compact laminate overlay. A thin board laid over a sound existing top. Quick, but only where the old top is flat and firmly fixed.

Our quartz vs sintered stone guide compares heat, chipping and price in detail.

Replace the Top or Redo the Kitchen?

A new top on old cabinets makes sense when:

  • the cabinet carcasses are dry, level and firmly fixed;
  • the old top is cracked, stained or chipped but the layout works for you;
  • you want a stone top now and plan to change cabinet doors later.

Replace the cabinets too if the bottom carcass is swollen from water, the doors no longer close square, or you want to move the sink or hob. Heavy stone on a weak carcass can crack. Small fixes like hinges and door alignment can be done by our handyman team.

HDB Rules and What to Check

  • No permit for countertops. HDB does not require a permit to build a kitchen countertop, but the cement mortar base and tile finishes together must not exceed 50mm, and concrete shelves are not allowed.
  • Sink pipes. If water or waste pipes have to be moved or replaced, that work is done by a PUB Licensed Plumber.
  • Gas hobs. Gas pipe alterations are done by City Energy or a licensed gas service worker, never by the countertop installer.
  • Weep holes. If your kitchen has a sanitary duct weep hole, the new top and cabinets must not block it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to replace a kitchen countertop in Singapore?

Quartz is about $120 to $180 per foot run and sintered stone about $220 to $380 for most brands. A typical 10 to 14 foot HDB top is about $1,200 to $2,500 in quartz.

Can you replace the countertop without changing the cabinets?

Yes, if the cabinets are dry, level and firmly fixed. Swollen or sagging carcasses should be replaced first, or the new top can crack.

Do I need an HDB permit to change my countertop?

No. HDB does not require a permit for kitchen countertops, but the mortar base and tiles must not exceed 50mm and concrete shelves are not allowed.

How long does countertop replacement take?

Measuring and templating take one visit. Fabrication usually takes about one to two weeks, and installation is often done in a day.

Is quartz or sintered stone better?

Sintered stone handles heat and sun better. Quartz is cheaper and less prone to edge chips. It depends on how you cook and your budget.
