- Spray paint or veneer doors. A premium, seamless look on a plywood carcass.
- Solid surface or stainless steel. Hygienic and tough, used in heavy-cooking kitchens.

Common Kitchen Cabinet Problems
- Swollen boards under the sink. A slow pipe leak soaks the base. Fix the leak first, then replace the base board or the whole unit.
- Sagging or misaligned doors. Usually worn hinges. A hinge swap often fixes it for much less than new cabinets.
- Drawers that stick. Worn runners can be replaced with full-extension soft-close ones.
- Peeling laminate edges. Heat from the hob or steam from a kettle lifts the edging. Re-edging is possible on sound boards.
- Mould inside top cabinets. Poor ventilation above the hob. A cooker hood and an occasional airing help.
Small fixes go through our handyman service. If several of these apply, a new kitchen is usually better value.
HDB Rules for Kitchen Cabinets
- No permit is needed for kitchen cabinets or countertops. Hacking walls or replacing floor tiles does need one.
- Weep holes. Some kitchens have an enclosed sanitary duct with a weep hole. Cabinets must not seal or block it.
- Gas risers. The gas riser and its branch pipe before the meter must not be tampered with. An enclosed riser needs a fully ventilated, removable access panel.
- Countertop base. The cement mortar base and tiles must not exceed 50mm, and concrete shelves are not allowed.
- Fixings. HDB limits nails and screws to 6mm in diameter and 40mm in penetration depth.
HDB asks owners to use a contractor from its Directory of Renovation Contractors for renovation works in a flat, even where no permit is needed. Renovation works are carried out by our partner V On Construction Pte. Ltd., listed in HDB's Directory of Renovation Contractors. For a full kitchen with hacking and tiling, see kitchen renovation. Frequently Asked Questions
How much do kitchen cabinets cost in Singapore?
Laminate top and bottom cabinets are typically about $180 to $360 per foot run in 2026. A typical HDB laminate kitchen with a countertop is about $5,000 to $6,500.
Are aluminium kitchen cabinets better than laminate?
Aluminium does not swell with water, so it suits the sink area. Laminate on plywood costs less and offers more colours. Some kitchens use aluminium only under the sink.
Do I need an HDB permit for new kitchen cabinets?
No. Cabinets and countertops need no permit, but they must not block weep holes or tamper with the gas riser.
How long does it take to make kitchen cabinets?
Fabrication usually takes about two to four weeks after measuring, and installation one to two days.
Can you just replace the cabinet doors?
Yes, if the carcasses are sound. New doors and handles refresh the kitchen for much less than full replacement.
