Venetian Blinds Singapore: Slat Materials
| Slat | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Aluminium, 25mm | Kitchens, toilets, offices | Light, moisture-resistant and the lowest cost. Can dent if knocked |
| Faux wood (PVC), 50mm | Bathrooms, kitchens, humid rooms | Wood look that handles moisture. Heavier than aluminium |
| Basswood, 50mm | Living rooms and bedrooms | Real timber look. Keep away from wet areas, as it can warp |
Venetian blinds tilt to let light in while blocking the view, but light leaks through the cord holes and between slats, so they do not fully darken a room. For bedrooms that need full darkness, see blackout roller blinds.

Looking After Venetian Blinds
- Dusting. Close the slats and wipe with a microfibre cloth or a duster, then turn them the other way.
- Kitchens. Aluminium and faux wood can be wiped with mild soapy water. Wood should only be dusted.
- Broken strings or slats. These can usually be repaired. See blinds repair.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much do Venetian blinds cost in Singapore?
Aluminium Venetian blinds are typically $5 to $7 per sq ft installed. Faux wood and basswood are about $8.50 to $14 per sq ft, or $250 to $400 for a standard HDB window.
Which Venetian blinds are best for kitchens and toilets?
Aluminium or faux wood (PVC). Both handle moisture and can be wiped. Real wood can warp in wet areas.
Do Venetian blinds block light completely?
No. Light comes through the cord holes and the small gaps between slats. They are good for light control, not full blackout.
What slat width should I choose?
25mm slats suit small windows and a light look. 50mm slats give a clearer view when open and a bolder look, and are common for wood and faux wood.
Can broken Venetian blinds be repaired?
Often, yes. Broken lift cords, ladder strings, tilt wands and a few slats can usually be replaced.
